Technical SEO Problems That Kill Your Rankings

Article featured image

Getting into technical SEO feels overwhelming at first because there's this whole layer of website stuff happening that you can't actually see. But most technical problems follow patterns, and beginners tend to stumble over the same things.

Broken internal links everywhere

You reorganize your site, change some URLs, and suddenly you've got dozens of links pointing to pages that don't exist anymore. These 404 errors waste crawl budget and create dead ends for both users and search engines. Use Screaming Frog or similar tools to find them. There are always more than you think.

Sitemap issues nobody checks

Your XML sitemap is supposed to list all your important pages for search engines. But people forget to update it when they add content, or they include pages that are blocked by robots.txt, or the sitemap file itself returns an error. Check Google Search Console under the sitemaps section and you'll probably find warnings you didn't know existed.

HTTPS problems and mixed content

You moved to HTTPS (good), but some images or scripts still load over HTTP. Browsers throw security warnings, and it looks sketchy. Or worse, both HTTP and HTTPS versions of your site are indexed, splitting your ranking signals between them.

Terrible URL structure

URLs like "yoursite.com/p=12345" or ones with five subdirectories don't help anyone. Good URLs should give humans and search engines a clue about the page content. Once you've got hundreds of pages indexed, changing URLs becomes complicated, so get this right early.

Ignoring Core Web Vitals

These measure actual user experience stuff like how long before people can interact with your page. They've been ranking factors since 2021, but lots of beginners don't even know they exist. The metrics can seem confusing, but start by just looking at your scores in Search Console.

None of this is glamorous work, but it's foundational. Fix the technical stuff and your content actually has a chance to rank.
